I’ve found yoga can be more sustainably energizing for me than that a double shot latte from Starbies.
Don’t worry. I’m not here to knock caffeine. Not in the slightest. I love caffeine. My nervous system does not. I have to switch to decaf at 8 a.m. (yes, A.M.) or else I’m wired all day and all night. It also doesn’t really make me any less tired. Sure, I get a jolt for the first half hour, but then after that it just feels like my brain and heart are revved up all day while the rest of my body still wants to climb under the covers.
My contemplative practices provide me with much more sustainable ways to manage my energy, particularly my pranayama and breathwork practices.
In the yogic system, the breath is deeply intertwined with our prana, our vital life force. Our breath is a direct gateway to our energy body. It’s a built-in mood enhancer. It can be energizing, calming or sustaining.
Pay attention to your breath right now. How does it correspond with your mood and energy levels?

Surya Bhedana (Sun Piercing) or right nostril breathing. The right side of our body is said to be our solar, our yang side. It correlates with the left hemisphere of the brain, which governs linear thinking and logic. It’s the part of the brain we want online when we need to generate and produce.
